Fall speed is throttled - innovation slows the free fall of wastewater

With a special installation cone for wastewater manholes, Swietelsky-Faber GmbH offers its customers an innovation that can reduce maintenance and upkeep costs in the long term. The funnel is now being used after an extensive sewer renovation commissioned by the Reinhaltverband Großraum Windischgarsten.

On this contract, the specialists at Swietelsky-Faber renovated numerous runs and manholes. A particular challenge was the renovation of manhole number 290025 (see details in 1The work on manhole 2900257). With the conventional repair, the contract for us on this manhole was not yet complete. We found that due to the previously free drop of the wastewater, or due to its high fall speed, damage to the manhole base could undoubtedly be expected in the long term, explains Dipl. Ing. Viktor Stoichovski, deputy branch manager of Swietelsky-Faber Kanalsanierung GmbH in Leonding.

Wastewater is being soothed

To reduce the flow speed, Viktor Stoichovski therefore developed a special installation cone and worked out and implemented the project in cooperation with the civil engineering office Thurriedl&Mayr and the subcontractor Meisl. And this is how the innovation works: The funnel located inside the manhole creates a radial hydrodynamics or vertical flow orientation with vertical velocity zones. These soften the wastewater being discharged, which then glides along the pipe in circular movements and hits the bottom of the manhole at a reduced speed.

The benefits of this investment are clear to everyone involved: A renovation of the substructure will no longer be necessary in the coming years, so maintenance and upkeep costs will be reduced in the long term. And thanks to the open design of the funnel, cleaning and inspection work can be carried out easily, explains Dipl. Ing. Stoichovski and names the achieved contract goals: all damage was repaired, the longevity of the manhole was improved, and the structure can fulfill its functions perfectly.

The work on manhole 290025

  • Base and berm renovation using coating mortar (this includes chipping off corroded concrete parts, exposing cracks and holes, cleaning and manually filling the damaged areas, coating)
  • Manhole repair of inlets (inlets that had been improperly connected were cut off and the joints filled with repair mortar; afterwards the inlets were laminated)
  • Cracks and collapses were sealed with wastewater-resistant repair mortar
  • Cracks and joints were injected and repaired (cracks or joints cleaned, scraped out, milled, packers set, injected with water-stop injection, repair mortar applied)
  • Removal of rungs
  • Coating of concrete surfaces (the substrate was prepared - after pretreatment it was free of loose parts, release agents, efflorescence, oil, growth, plastic and bitumen coatings and other organic and inorganic deposits)
  • cement-bonded bonding bridge and coating were applied
